Michter's US★1 Sour Mash is one of the most distinctive whiskeys in the Michter's range, and one of the hardest to pin down. Its unique grain selection means it cannot be categorised as a bourbon or a rye, sitting instead in a category of its own.
The sour mash process uses a portion of previously fermented mash as the starter for each new batch, much like a sourdough culture, giving the whiskey a unique taste. Distilled and bottled in Kentucky, it is matured in fire-charred new American white oak barrels and released in small batches only when Master Distiller Dan McKee and the Michter's tasting panel consider it ready.
